though hope is frail, it's hard to kill

Marina Ismail
Former Princess of Azadistan

_________________

Marina is a pacifist and idealist, although the time as princess and politician has shown her how harsh reality and humanity can be. Despite the hardships that her country, Azadistan, and the rest of the world went through, she believes that fighting can't solve anything and stands firmly by that.

Born and brought up in a normal household, Marina had planned to become a musician but due to her lineage, she was chosen to become the First Princess of Azadistan, burdened with the duty of saving her country from ruin. While inexperienced and naive, Marina was a symbol of hope for her people. Although she tried very hard to gain help from other countries, her political inexperience and the fact that the world was beginning to suffer under Celestial Being's activity resulted only in failures until Azadistan was destroyed four years later, ending her time as princess.

Although Azadistan as a kingdom disappeared, many people still recognize her as princess. Children beam at the sight of her and continue to address her as princess, finding the strength to be cheerful even in bitter times simply because she is there.

Marina is gentle and kind and very good with children. After befriending the orphans at the Katharon base, she composes a song with them—sort of following her original dream of becoming a musician. The song is something that gives not only the children but also adults hope, hope for a better tomorrow. Even without being an official princess, she remains the symbol of hope to those who know her.

She cares deeply for Setsuna although they disagree on the matter of fighting. For her, it's inconceivable that anyone would try to fight in order to create peace. In her mind, fighting will only cause more fighting and nothing will ever get solved for good. It's interesting to see that although Setsuna is her polar opposite in this regard, they still manage to connect with each other, caring for each other. For Marina, Setsuna is a source of strength and hope the same way she is for her people. At the same time, she wishes to protect Setsuna, hoping that he can stop fighting one day.

Marina is very emotional and intuitive. Although usually soft-spoken and gentle, she can become very passionate about her ideals. She also learned to become surer of herself in her years of duty and knows when to stand firm to the point of being stubborn, to make sure that things will get done the way she believes it is best.

While running from A-Laws, Shirin hands her a gun for defense. However, Marina refuses to take it, saying that she will not fight. It's clearly visible that although it might have been the better choice to take it, Marina sees it as more important to teach the children who were around her, watching, that fighting isn't the only thing to do. She even risks her life to keep a child from shooting at the enemy, embracing him to stop him from firing. It shows that even under enormous pressure, Marina is brave to do and teach what she believes in.

Marina is a symbol of hope for those around her, but simultaneously, she sees hope in exactly those people, believing that humans will one day learn to live in peace.
